The more I study Mary Magdalene, I see her as a committed disciple even in very trying circumstances. Was it love for her Lord that caused her to stay throughout the crucifixion and burial? Or did she know something the others did not? I believe it could be both. Love begets love and the love Jesus had for her was apparent in her lingering throughout the burial. I have never reflected on both Mary anointing Jesus feet and her actually remaining through the burial as being linked. This is probably because I didn’t realize this Mary was Mary Magdalene and also because from a young age the emphasis was on her being a prostitute, which is far from accurate. I also heard more about Mary lavishing her love on Jesus rather than what she knew about his burial. CeCe Winans song “Alabaster Box” and Phillips, Craig and Dean’s song “Pour My Love On You” are both beautiful, but the emphasis is love, not burial. This realization has been very eye-opening for me!
Mary also seems to be quite confident in her mission of anointing the feet of Jesus. She isn’t moved by the fact that others may have left and abandoned him at the cross. She is constantly present. Even to the point where she is back again immediately after the Sabbath. Some would call that grief but not Mary!!! I believe Mary was waiting in expectation to receive a message from the risen Savior. But she seems caught off guard when she didn’t see his ‘physical’ body. Perhaps she didn’t expect his body to be “untouchable”, but it didn’t take her long to recognize him and to tell the disciples.
She is a real preserver of the gospel who unfortunately has been lost and forgotten, or was she intentionally “invoiced”?
