I sat near the pool for 30 minutes. I took a few deep breaths and could feel my body settle into a comfortable space. Meditation music played softly so I could keep time without having to look at the clock. The sounds of nature were much louder than the music, so the music helped me re-center when I became distracted. Distraction came when I would listen to the birds and try to understand what God was doing in nature. Distraction came when my 3-year-old wanted to meditate right beside me (this was a precious moment). Distraction came when my 8-year-old son wanted to know if he could have a cookie. Distraction came when I could hear water drip from the gutters indicating the need to be cleaned out. Distraction came when my legs seemed to go numb. Distraction came when my husband drove up for a quick bite to eat before returning to work. Distraction came when I heard a gunshot in the distance (we live where people target practice in their backyard). After each distraction, I would find the sound of the music again and re-center. Although this sounds like it would be frustrating, it was not. In fact, each time I re-settled, I had a greater awareness of God’s presence in me, not just around me. I sense the Lord is saying to me, “Life is precious. What you are experiencing is not distractions, but life all around you. Be present, re-center, and enjoy the journey of life being interwoven in and around you. I am here.”
