I have often heard that centering prayer has many healing benefits, but I don’t think I really thought about the physical aspects of it. Yesterday, I dug a small trench in our back yard to divert water around our garage due to all the rain we have had lately. This morning I woke up with muscle aches. I just knew I would need tylenol (real soon), but first I went outside to sit in silence. It was not an enlightening experience like the other times, but it was still satisfying and refueling. After my timer ended, I grabbed a cup of coffee and book for today’s reading assignment. I may have read a few pages before Kali, my 3-year-old daughter, got up. I began to move around slowly, but immediately noticed I had no muscle aches. The pain I felt from digging the trench with a shovel…and using the axe for the roots, was gone!
Of course I looked up physical benefits of meditation and found where the physical body can also be healed and repaired, especially with diseases where stress is a contributor such as fibromyalgia, autoimmune disorders, and some infertility.
