My Nana is 87. She has dementia and recently fell and broke her hip. She had surgery with an unexpected extended hospital stay followed by a few weeks of therapy in rehab. Now that she is home our family is taking turns caring for her.
Today, as I sat with her and helped her around the house she said, “It’s awful to be helpless.” I looked up at her, smiled and said, “Yes it is, but its better to be helpless and have help than to be helpless without help.” She paused and said, “Yes, that’s true.” Then she smiled and said how grateful she was to have help. I breathed in that reflection and pondered it myself. I too am grateful she has help.
