Wednesday Lent 4

Here’s what I’m saying: Ask and you’ll get; Seek and you’ll find; Knock and the door will open.

Don’t bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This is not a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we’re in. If your little boy asks for a serving of fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? If your little girl asks for an egg, do you trick her with a spider? As bad as you are, you wouldn’t think of such a thing—you’re at least decent to your own children.

And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?

Luke 1:9-13 MSG

I’ve often heard that if we ask for something in line with God’s will, we will get it. But who really knows what is in line with God’s will? I don’t.

Today, this scripture reads differently for me. It begins with asking and ends with the question, “And don’t you think the Father who conceived you in love will give the Holy Spirit when you ask him?” Could it be that what we are to ask for is the Holy Spirit? Holy Spirit is always in line with God’s will. This changes everything I’ve ever thought about regarding what we are to ask for.

Holy Spirit, guide me.

Holy Spirit, show me.

Holy Spirit, help me.

Holy Spirit, reveal to me.

Holy Spirit, walk with me.

Holy Spirit,  be with me.

And so, there is much to ask for! Ask and you’ll get.
