Enneagram and the Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23, “The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.  Against such, there is no law.”

I used to believe these fruits were somewhere outside of me. Something I had to look outside of myself to find. And once found I would need to work to develop or cultivate them. Oh, how I love it when my beliefs shift a little.

I am aware that we can make some pretty wild and unwise choices in life. Sometimes, we follow an instinctual response we feel in our gut, heart, or head. Sometimes, it lines up with Holy Spirits leading, and sometimes it doesn’t.  This is when we get into trouble or go astray.

The fruit of the Spirit is not always visible in our lives, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t present. It just means we are unable to access the Divine in us, perhaps for various reasons.

Some questions that come to mind are:

  • What can we do to make these fruits visible?
  • What is going on in our lives that has caused these fruits to be invisible?
  • What defenses or maladaptive qualities do we choose over and over again, hoping to re-create these fruits in our lives? (Creating the false self/ego instead. )

Enneagram work (embedded in the Wisdom Tradition) can help uncover our authentic self. When we ask for help, Holy Spirit begins teaching us how to make these fruits visible once again. It truly is a work of God’s grace when we begin to uncover these fruits.
