Walter Burghardt describes contemplation as taking a “long, loving look at the real”. Spiritual Direction is the ancient spiritual practice of “listening to God together” while taking a “long, loving look at the real”. It is a place where one learns how to notice and pay attention to God in their own life as they share with their spiritual director.
It is a practice in which one may seek to strengthen their faith, renew their prayer life, or find greater direction in their life. In Spiritual Direction, the seeker meets with a spiritual director, or spiritual counselor. This director is trained in contemplative ways of hearing and seeing. A director companions the seeker on their journey. God is the only real agent of growth in these sessions.
