
This dog. He smiles and brightens a room. Like most of us, he snaps, too. I met him about 18 months ago during one of the worst times of my life. We were gathered at my mom’s house, devastated about the news of my oldest sister. We were numb, in shock, angry, heartbroken, and unsure how we would move forward.
Macie and Avery had just arrived. Hercules was with them. He walked in and somehow demanded the attention of the entire room. He didn’t snap, didn’t growl, and didn’t bark. All he did was raise his ears, and immediately, I was smitten. It was as if he was there to cheer us up, to distract us from our grief long enough for our hearts to breathe.
As a faithful companion, grief would be here to stay, but in this moment, it felt good to breathe!
